Ritchie Smith Associates (RSA) has provided landscape architecture and urban design services to the Center City Commission to shape a more attractive and accessible public realm in downtown Memphis. The first phase of construction focused on the streets surrounding Court Square. The South Court sidewalk was widened to provide space for outdoor cafe seating and enhanced with new paving, street trees, and street lights. Plans for subsequent phases have extended similar enhancements to the sidewalks of additional streets, and to several alleys used as pedestrian passageways, enlivening the downtown core. RSA worked with the Downtown Neighborhood Association and area merchants to provide desired amenities and to minimize inconvenience during construction.
